Incident which led to awarding of Kirti Chakra to Brig Sunil Kumar Razdan is heartening. In the year 1994, while posted in J K, the then Lt. Col. Sunil Kumar Razdan was deployed for counter insurgency operations in south of Kulgam. Having earned a great reputation amongst the locals of that area, a group of local Muslim villagers approached him one day with the sad news that fourteen of their lady folk including unmarried girls had been abducted by a group of terrorists. Sunil obtained permission from his superiors for launching a search cum rescue operation. After a 32 hour gun battle, the hide out was neutralised. Sunil saw three terrorists laying in a pool of blood with weapons still in their hands. While he was crossing over, one of the bodies posing as dead, suddenly turned around and pumped a shower of bullets into Sunil's abdomen at point blank range. Sunil shot the terrorist dead while holding his abdomen with one hand. He saw the intestinal loop coming out of his abdomen. He pulled off his patka, collected his intestines and tied his patka around his abdomen to hold them from falling out. A bullet had pierced through his spine, thus paralysing him. He continued to exhort his men, refused to be evacuated and continued to direct the operation until all the terrorists were killed and all ladies rescued. President of India awarded Lt. Col. Sunil Kumar Razdan with Kirti Chakra for this brave act.
