Identity in Doldrums
Prof. B. L Seru
People's interest and political decisions should keep a respectable balance with eachother, if Indian democracy has to survive and people to retain confidence in the same.
The universal worldview is the foundation of our composite culture. India has been home for centuries to all great religions of the world. Indians have learnt to live together, grow together, and learn to remain devoted to their respective individual faith., The co-existence-sarva, Dharma Sambhavana is the cardinal philosophy of Indian cultural ethos. In this co-religious existence, ironically K.P (Kashmiri Pundit) has been alienated and isolated from the place of their birth for nearly 18 years now. The question which often comes to the mind of the right thinking people of this country is the indifferent attitude of the state and the central government towards the ethnic minority. Opening the chapters of K.P's history, Nil Mata Purana gives a vivid description of Kashmir. K.P's have rich cultural heritage, Kashmir possessed numerous religious endowments and shrines. There are famous centers of religious pilgrimages like the holy Amaranth, the maharagya shrine. The sun temple at martand, ma sharika temple on hari parabat hillock and the high Gangabal Lake as sacred as the Ganga.
There is historical evidence that 35% of Sanskrit literature came from Kashmir to the rest of India. The Shiva philosophy got new dimensions in the folk lore in Lal Vakh of great sage Lallishwari (1331-1376 A.D).
History has it that Buddishim, Vashnism and Shivasim flourished side by side in Kashmir. Lalitaditya (701-737 A.D) was the great Hindu emperor of Kashmir, who got temples built which even now is of the great archeological importance." There was not a township in village no river no island, where this great king did not lay down a sacred foundation" says Kalhan in Rajatarangini in 12th century. K.P's are historically and traditionally community of scholars. A community which is almost cent percent educated in varied disciplines. With advent of Islam K.P's influence was forced to wane .Islam because of forcible conversion and large scale persecution of K.P's became a wild spread faith the rein of terror and pan Islamic ideology let loose by sultan sikander(1389-1413A.D) came to be known in history as Butshikan. This Butshikan propagated Nizamamustafa. Thus there was a persecution to Hindus to such an extent that only eleven Hindu families survived conversions. It was the first mass migration of K.P's which took place. They scattered all over India to save there religion and Hindu ethos. Indian independence has brought no relief to already tortured community. K.P's have lived in the last six decades of Indian freedom in absolute fear. The pressure tactics and persecution that K.P's faced in Kashmir drove almost have their number out of their home (Kashmir) during the first four decades of Indian independence in search of their livelihood. The Hindu community, which has been support base of India in the state, has always been targeted by Muslim secessionist forces as their main enemy in the state. In the Indian secular ideology K.P's were flushed out in 1990, when Islamic terrorists struck the valley and thousands of minority community men and women were murdered, tortured and raped. The temples were desecrated and property looted and brunt. A lot of misinformation camp gin has been launched from time to time to show to the world that K.P's have a dominant position in Kashmir. It is on records that Muslims are ruling elite in Kashmir since the dawn of independence they dominant entire economic organization. Islam is virtually the official religion of the state. The Kashmir province Hindu's has no elected representation in local bodies. Muslims monopolize 94% of the state services in Kashmir. More than 90% of the admissions to professional and technical and other educational; institutions are occupied and reserved for Muslims the Muslims as per the state records show 96% of agricultural land is owned by them.
The exodus of Hindu's has put the community in social and economic dilemma, as their existence is at stake they have lost community touch, their ethnic values their traditional language it is above all their identity crisis. The political bosses have mortgaged their home address to Muslim appeasement for vote politics- which is a big shame.
