The BSF has stepped up patrolling all along the International Border (IB) in Jammu region to ensure that the terrorists and narcotics smugglers don’t manage to take advantage of thick fog and extreme chill for infiltration and smuggling of weapons and narcotics. The women BSF personnel have also been doing their job. They too have been deployed on the borders for patrolling. Sophisticated electronic gadgets have been installed to track any kind of unwanted movement in the border belt.
“Additional troops have been deployed along the International Border with Pakistan in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts for round-the-clock patrolling covering all gaps, vulnerable areas, riverines etc to thwart intrusion bids,’’ the BSF soldiers told visiting newspersons in the border area.
Asserting that they are maintaining very high alert on the borders in view of dense fog, the soldiers were, however, of the view that the people can feel safe and celebrate the New Year as they are guarding the borders effectively and efficiently.
Soldiers said their morale is very high and chilly weather conditions including dense fog can’t deter them from patrolling the borders with Pakistan whether it’s day or night.
“The patrolling goes on uninterruptedly,’’ they said.
Though no major infiltration attempt has been reported on the International Border in the Jammu region in the past some time, there have been reports that some groups of terrorists have been camping on Pakistan side of the border waiting for an opportunity to sneak-in.
Last visible infiltration was reported in March this year in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district. In the gun-battle that lasted few days, four police personnel were martyred and two terrorists were killed.
“The electronic gadgets have also been installed in large numbers all along the International Border to keep strict surveillance on undesirable activities on Pakistan side,’’ the sources said, adding the equipments which can beat the fog are also in place.
There have been specific inputs of presence of the terrorists on Pakistan side of the International Border waiting for an opportunity to infiltrate into this side especially during the winters taking cover of thick fog.
Behind the BSF, the Border Police, Special Operations Group (SOG) and Village Defence Guards (VDGs) have been maintaining high degree of surveillance especially during the nights when chances of infiltration are more.
Some parts of fencing on the International Border between Jammu and Kathua districts and parts of neighbouring Punjab were washed away during heavy rains and floods in the Monsoon especially in the month of August this year. The border posts were also damaged. Fencing and border posts have been reconstructed and repaired, the sources said.
There have been reports that a group of three to four terrorists was trying to infiltrate into the Indian territory from International Border between Kathua and Punjab. The terrorists have reportedly come very close to Pakistan side of the border for intrusion. The winter management strategy has also been put in place along the IB.
There have been increased drone activities on the IB in Punjab with smuggling of narcotics and arms. A number of such attempts have been foiled by the BSF and Punjab Police.
