Red-faced Pakistan asks US to remove incorrect Indian map showing PoK Washington deletes post
Pakistan has said it contacted Washington after a map shared by the US Trade Representative showed Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin as part of India.
Pakistan called the map wrong and said it did not match United Nations maps. After Pakistan raised the issue, the US removed the post.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said it told US officials that the map was inaccurate. Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the US accepted the mistake and deleted the image. He added that UN maps show Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed area and claimed the correction supported this position. The map appeared soon after India and the US announced an interim trade deal. It caught attention because it showed the entire Jammu and Kashmir region, including PoK, as part of India. It also showed Aksai Chin, which is claimed by China, as Indian territory.
Earlier, US maps usually showed PoK as disputed. Because of this, many people saw the latest map as a shift in the US approach towards India. The timing is also important as India and the US are improving relations, including a cut in US tariffs on Indian goods.
Indian experts had welcomed the map, calling it a sign of US support for India.
Some analysts said it was embarrassing for Pakistan, especially since Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir has visited the US several times and also held meeting with President Donald Trump.
