Why Blame God For Everything We Don't Like
Some people may think the hand of God is behind everything that happens. Human tendency is to blame God for misfortunes, bad luck, failure, sickness, sorrows, someone's death or even the tsunami disaster. But these do not come from God at all. Rabbi Harold S Kushner says, "God does not cause our misfortunes. Some are caused by bad luck, others are caused by people and still others are simply an inevitable consequence of our being human and mortal, living in a world of inflexible natural laws." The painful things that happen to us are not punishment for our misbehaviour as we presume, nor are they in any way a grand design on God's part. Because the tragedy is not God's will, we need not feel betrayed by God when tragedy strikes. Instead, we can turn to Him for help in overcoming it; we can tell ourselves that God is as outraged by the tragedy as we are. No one is free of all sorrows. There always comes a day in our lives when we experience bereavement, bad luck, sickness, defamation, or any other setback and in our pain and sorrow we let guilt, jealousy, and self-imposed loneliness make the bad situation even worse. Our sorrows can bring understanding as well as pain. Pain makes us sensitive, compassionate and attentive. Out of love and sorrow can come a compassion that endures. What is important is not luxury but love, not wealth but wisdom, not gold but goodness. Out of love may come sorrow but out of sorrow darkness. And out of the lightwe bring to others will come light for ourselvesthelight of solace, strength, of transfiguring and consecrating purpose. God is our support, help and shield, the One who is going to redeem the world. We know that many times life is going to hurt us and bruise us. We know that many times things are going to get much worse before they get better, butwe have faith that if we listen to God, meaning that if we live a moral and decent life, ultimately thingsare going to bemuch better. Weallbelleve God's pow cends our own. The death and suffering that we see about us are real and we cannot explain them. We do not know why God has created death, pain and suffering and why Hallows them to continue. We know that at the end ofdays, God will explain it to us and allus to understand why, in human therBut today we cannot understand theToday we are only a partner with Goin life and in enhancing life. We can never be a partner with God in deathHis power and understandings far surpass ours. We must laud God and tell him thHe has great power, not because He egotistical, but because we need to hope, hope that our sufferinghas nobeen in vain and hope that eventual suffering will be overcome and hopethat eventually we will understandsuffering and especially hope that mwill always understandthat he can be God's partner in life and never Gartner in death.
