validation and exchangeof goods and services and for commercial transactions. But these instruments of transaction have totally taken charge of our lives. Money has become the yardstick for measuring importance, status and prestige-its source notwithstanding. Wealth has wider connotations that transcend mere materialistic considerations. Ancient Hindu philosophy and mythology, for instance, looked at wealth from a holistic perspective. Lakshmi is revered as the goddess of wealth and prosperity, both material and spiritual. The word 'Lakshmi' is derived from the Sanskrit word laksme, meaning 'goal'. Lakshmi isnot justan indulgence but the ultimate goal of existence. She is depicted infemaleform with four arms. She wears red clothes and stands on a aspects of human life: dharma, righteousness; kama, genuine desires; artha, wealth and moksha, liberation from birth and death. The lotus-on which Lakshmi is standing-signifies detachment, even while enjoying wealth, for the lotus grows in water yet does not get wet. Money creates a psychosis, a kind of obsession. Financial security has become the top priority for humankind. Earning money has become the fulcrum of all existence and activities; it is almost an addiction. This endeavour never has an end point. It mutates into pathological insatiable lust. The following story illustrates how stoking the flame of desire corrupts the mind. Lakshmi is piqued by a poor woodcutter who has absolutely no desire for any wealth. He was totally content with of a hard day's work. He never craved for more. Lakshmi was intrigued by his disdainful attitude. She asked Narada, the wise one, what she could do to get the poor man interested in wealth. Narada offered a strange solution. He asked Lakshmi to gift him 98 gold coins. So she arranged for the woodcutter to stumble upon a bag that contained 98 gold coins. He thereafter remained perennially restless, possessed with desire. Lakshmi asked Narada about this puzzling behaviour: Naradareplied, thatneed never corrupts the mind. It's greed which is the real culprit.
