Heartfelt Prayer Helps You Focus and Concentrate

What is the purpose of prayer? Once the mind gets stilled even temporarily, power is derived from the eternal self. This power can be utilised to give worldly benefits. Inner power rushes like a mighty current and can be diverted into any channel you wish. This is how prayers lead to the achievement of desires and also elevation from suffering. Indirectly, this power is infused in the particular God whose worship ap- pears to give the desired effect. However, K N Bhargava, former accountant-general, in 'Road to Happiness', cautions that this is not the correct use of power derived from the eternal self as its real purpose is to purify the conscience. To the extent this power is diverted to attainments of a worldly nature, the real progress of cleaning of the conscience is obstructed It is a case of misappropria tion of the power attained b great efforts but the capacity for securing such attainments is definitely derived by true prayer. Becoming an achiever through the instrument of prayer. Out of all the factors which inculcate plus-power to the conscience, meditation or concentration has maximum force and speed. Prayer implies the process of constant struggle for purification of the conscience, to steady and still the mind. Prayer teaches us the process of concentration of mind. Why do we pray to idols? The idea is to pitch some point for concentration, as otherwise the mind will not focus even for a short •while. Actual concentration is for a short time, as the mind wastes its resources more on feeding the sensual desires of a good dress for the deity, music and incense. If all this time were devoted to concentration, the results would be better. Jap, kirtan, bhajan, charity, pilgrimage and fasting have benefits. The supreme method of prayer is however complete concentration of mind. Mastery is obtained over all thoughts and feelings and desires remain under control. Bhargava says: "People have different conceptions about prayer. Some think that real prayer lies in worshipping God in the temple, mosque or church. Others believe in fast- ing, jap and charity. Some believe in going round sacred places and feeding the poor. Many have faith in meditation or yagna and other rituals. Some feel that per forming good actions and serving humanity is real prayer. What is real prayer and what purpose it serves is a question that requires careful understanding. "Prayer cleans the mind mirror, the conscious, with a view to establish direct contact with the Supreme Self and lead to the right path of happiness. All actions and daily routines which have a plus force are, therefore, branches of prayer in different forms, and have the resultant effect of assisting the mind to be still". Those who perform their duty with complete devotion, sincerity and honesty also pray in an indirect manner, and derive the same advantages. Real prayer will sharpen intelligence, give proper and timely guidance in day-to-day actions, show correct path in all directions, restore mind-peace and infuse power to think correctly and attain achievements with greater speed and efficiency, while elevating one to higher levels of consciousness.
