People, irrespective of their birth, deserve equal treatment and sympathy. Equality, liberty, fraternity. This was a cultural, humane (French) approach, a form of idealistic rationalisation of the internal indivisibility and unity of historical process. Of course it did not happen in one day. Thinkers like Rousseau had criticised feudal class relation of the despotic regime of bourgeois oligarchy and civil liberties. Rousseau, being an exponent of the theory of 'Social Contract' said that in the natural state, there was no war between people, only friendship and harmony reigned. It was a discriminatory system of education that created hatred and jealousy among people. One is tempted to ask: Can pacifism or spirituality ever pre vail on this ego-bogged planet? Can man really transcend his identity, which is defined on the basis of caste, creed, race, nationality or codified religion? Like all other animals, we are born with a survival instinct. Food, sex and territory are our basic drives. But animals are not greedy. They are satisfied once their basic needs are fulfilled. Whereas man is the only being who refuses to be what he is. His quest for abundance is amazing. He also suffers from the fear of death. That is why he has created a variety of gods and deities. Even his love and devotion is a kind of bargain. In search of bread man is forced to go and live in a foreign land. Because of the sense of 'otherness' in a distant land, he is considered to be an alien by the local inhabitants. The result is that both develop a kind of animosity towards each other. This kind of complexity can be compared with the devouring mother. The devouring mother is an ancient archetype, characterised as a cannibalistic mother who devours her children. Although she provides for her children (immigrants) material needs, because of their separate status, she has a great deal of anger and swallows up their identity from time to time. Thus we find that the incomprehensi- bility of life has become more incomprehensible and yet weŠµ must find a solution. The working of the cosmos is dependent on naturalism. Naturalism is one of the interpretations of the universe. In order to understand the working of the universe we will have to accept the fact that the universe is divided into two parts - the physical world and the world of conscious ness. Then the interre lationship of these two parts of the universe enemy of human understanding. For instance the witnesses of Jehovah believe that Jehovah stated to the first human pair: "Be faithful and become many and fill the earth... subjugate the fish of the sea and flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth". The Bible says that in the last days we shall go through critical times that will be hard to deal with. While most faiths are similar in basic perspective, there are religions that contradict one another. Buddhist values, however, are founded in humane spiritual ground, highlighting the conscience and its commitment to any form of life. Religions there are many; many more are their interpretations. If the bottom line is consciousness elevation and the choice is yours, why complain?
